FAQs about Feeding Recommendations
We've put together some questions we're hearing from our community. Feel free to send us an email if you still have questions. We love hearing from you!
We proudly offer LOONAWELL’s complete food for dogs as a human-grade and organic option for your dog. What exactly does this mean?
Every ingredient used in our recipes is human-grade, identical to those you'd find in your local supermarket, and choose for your own family. As a result, by giving your dog LOONAWELL food, you Crafted with these fresh, high-quality ingredients, our recipes are not only highly nutritious and easily digestible but also delightfully tasty for your dogs—and even for you!
The daily food recommendation for dogs is meticulously established to align with their specific energy requirements. This involves a careful balance of essential nutrients such as amino acids, vitamins, minerals, and fatty acids, tailored relative to the food's energy density to ensure optimal nutrient intake.
A higher energy density in food means that dogs need to consume less volume to meet their energy needs, whereas lower energy density foods require a larger intake to fulfill these requirements. This density is determined by the proportions of proteins, fats, carbohydrates, and water present in the food. Consequently, dry foods, due to low water content, are considered more energy-dense, allowing for smaller daily portions in comparison to wet foods.
LOONAWELL food features exceptionally fresh ingredients that are minimally processed compared to traditional dry dog foods (kibble). This ensures a higher digestibility for your dog. As a result of this easier-to-digest food, you will notice that your dog’s stools will be in less quantity, smaller, well-formed, and almost odorless.
Additionally, this improved digestion enhances the overall quality of life for your dog, promoting better general health and well-being.
Another significant benefit of LOONAWELL's wet foods is their contribution to your dog's hydration. Since dogs primarily meet their hydration needs through their diet and drinking water, consuming wet food supports their hydration status more effectively.
When feeding your puppy (from 3 to 12 months), split the daily recommended dose into four meals throughout the day.
As a general rule for adult dogs (from 12 months upwards), split the daily recommendation in one or two meals per day.
If your dog comes from dry food (kibble):
To ensure a smooth transition to LOONAWELL’s food, gradually introduce it over a 10-day period as follows:
Day 1-3: 75% of current food mixed with 25% of LOONAWELL food
Day 4-6: 50% of current food mixed with 50% of LOONAWELL food
Day 7-10: 25% of current food mixed with 75% of LOONAWELL food
Please note that these percentages are based on the total daily quantity recommended for each type of food.
If your dog comes from wet food:
To ensure a smooth transition to LOONAWELL food, gradually introduce it over a 3-day period as follows:
Day 1: 75% of current food mixed with 25% of LOONAWELL food
Day 2: 50% of current food mixed with 50% of LOONAWELL food
Day 3: 25% of current food mixed with 75% of LOONAWELL food
Please note that these percentages are based on the total daily quantity recommended for each type of food.
At LOONAWELL, we prioritize transparency. Therefore, every ingredient in our recipes is clearly listed on both the product label and our website.
If your dog has specific allergies, you can easily verify that the allergens are not present in the food you choose. If an ingredient isn’t listed on the label, it’s not in our food—our commitment is that simple and clear.
We take food safety seriously, and our recipes are specially formulated to avoid common allergens.
Use the guide below to classify your dog’s activity level according to LOONAWELL’s criteria:
- Sedentary: Leash walking less than 1 hour/day.
- Active: Walking for 1-3 hours/day.
- Very active: Engaging in play with other dogs or participating in sports (such as agility, swimming, canicross) for 3 to 6 hours per day.
Almost all LOONAWELL recipes contain a small portion (up to 10%) of high nutritional value grains, like brown and basmati rice, millet, or oats.
Although dogs do not have specific dietary requirements for carbohydrates, certain carbohydrate-rich foods, like whole grains, contain vital nutrients that promote health. These include health-promoting vitamins, minerals, and phytonutrients. Therefore, including a small percentage of these foods in your dog's diet is beneficial.
However, there is a big difference between incorporating some functional cereals into a dog's diet and feeding highly processed cereal-flour as the main ingredient of a dog diet.
Lamb & Love is the only recipe that can be considered “grain-free”.
If carbohydrates are not an essential nutrient for dogs…Why are they normally included in a high proportion in dry foods (kibble)?
The answer is easy. Carbohydrates are important in dry pet food processing. The principal function of carbohydrates in the process of manufacturing dry pet foods is to provide structural integrity to kibbles. The starch works like a “cement” that holds kibble together, preventing crumbling. It is unusual for a dry pet food to be formulated with fewer than 40% carbohydrate ingredients because of the minimum requirement for extrusion.
Moreover, foods rich in carbohydrates are normally cheaper than foods rich in protein and fat from animal origin.
LOONAWELL’s dog food is complete and balanced on its own, so there’s no need to mix it with other foods. However, if you prefer, you can safely combine it with other food options.
Once opened, the food should be stored in the refrigerator and used within a maximum of 48 hours.
Water is crucial in LOONAWELL's complete dog food for maintaining moisture, enhancing flavor, and ensuring nutritional quality. It forms the base of our slow-cooked, flavorful broths, making the food palatable and easy to digest. Our gentle cooking process preserves essential nutrients, ensuring your dog receives maximum health benefits. By including water, we create a nutritious, delicious, and hydrating meal that supports overall well-being.
